“Unconscious bias” is the monkey wrench in a person who is otherwise very careful about stereotyping and making assumptions about people. This bias is universal and stems from the brain’s natural tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing. Unconscious bias is far more prevalent than conscious prejudice and often incompatible with conscious values.
