The Universal Threat to Universal Tolerance
RECOGNIZING INTOLERANCE
The phrase “canary in a coal mine” is an allusion to the caged canaries that miners would carry down into the mine tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide collected in the mine, the canary, which is more sensitive to the gases than humans, would die, serving as a warning that the miners needed to evacuate immediately. This video explains why anti-Semitism is the “canary in the coal mine” of a civil society.
